In the contemporary world cartoons, television shows and movies have become important mediums
for inspiring kids to dream. Motion pictures have come to speak to children in ways similar to
and sometimes beyond books. However, it is disheartening to know there are thousands of children
who have never stepped foot in a cinema.
“Big Screen Big Dreams” aim to remedy this by using the power of cinema to introduce children to a whole new world of possibilities. The idea is very simple: we raise money through crowdfunding, donations and corporate relationships to take children from less advantaged neighbourhoods to the cinema.
We have also created a guideline on how we select movies that we feel can contribute to the emotional intelligence of a growing child.
With the hype and excitement around the “Black Panther” movie, Samuel together with the Talitha Koum Foundation took this opportunity to launch the initiative, through the #blackpantherchallenge. Using this hashtag to create awareness and thanks to the power of social media and corporate donations, Talitha Koum Foundation was able to raise enough money to hire a bus and take the wonderful children of Mveledzandivho Primary School in Soweto to Maponya Mall Ster-Kinekor. Ster-Kinekor also came to the party providing the popcorn and drinks to complete the cinema experience and making it even more special.
