A village described in the Venda language as “Tshitomboni Tsha Ha Mmbubana (the Rock of Mbubana) was Tshililo Samuel Siminya’s place of origin around 1922. Very little is spoken about this village just outside Thohoyandou.
The lastborn child to his parents, Samuel would then grow up in the small town of Getrusberg. It was in this forgotten town where he would eventually meet his wife, before moving with her to Johannesburg.
Getrusberg no longer exists under this name.
An ordinary black male born and raised in locations erased by time had little promise of building a legacy with his family and community. Samuel was no ordinary man.
Like many black South Africans of his time, Samuel did not have a formal education which undoubtedly made life difficult for a God fearing man uprooting his life and moving his wife to the city of Gold - Johannesburg. Tshiawelo, Soweto - a settlement established for Tsonga and Venda speakers was as natural a habitat as they could find under the circumstances. That’s where he settled.
Finding work as a driver and chauffeur propelled him into parts of the city that most black people did not have access to. Not one to be detoured by a position of disadvantage, Samuel was inspired to use what opportunity he had to build himself up. By quietly noting and observing conversations between his employers, he learned English and then learned how to read. This eventually led to more self investment which came full circle when he could one day read the Bible in his native language, Tshivenda.
In other ways his city travels, exposing him to the better developed white-only areas may have influenced his desire to help his own community. It’s this desire to build, his love for education as proved by how he educated himself and his religious faith that became the makings of a leader.
Samuel went on to see to the construction of the first Lutheran Church in Tshiawelo, a church that would be an active partner to some of the public schools in his community. His family and community remember him as more than just a leader; he was also a kind hearted and humble soul. So it’s only right that his legacy and self actualising spirit be the inspiration and value system on which Samuel - the company - bases its existence.
As an organisation named after such a simple but grand man, we have little choice but to uphold his legacy in the same way he lived: humble, self sustaining, and always ready to contribute to the positive development of the greater community. His birthplace may have been left out by time and history but here lives a legacy built by SAMUEL, son of Tshitomboni Tsha Ha Mmbubana… How fitting
